Meet Chloe Macis, a Webmarketing assistant at SHOPINVEST.

Updated: Nov 14, 2019

Chloe is a 19 years old business student at Kedge Business School in France. Keen on social medias and marketing she chose to specialize in "Digital Strategy" where she learned the basis of Webmarketing: Digital communication and community management. She is now considering working in that field for a company in the fashion industry as it also is one of her main interests.

Have you ever had a job that really stuck out in your mind?

Last semester I had the opportunity to realize my first internship at SHOPINVEST, a fashion retailer group in Paris. I held the post of a webmarketing assistant. It was my first experience in the field I want to specialize in. For 6 months, I had the chance to learn a lot of things.

What were your main roles in this job/occupancy?

As said previously I was a webmarketing assistant, I was working hand in hand with the Marketing Director and the Webmarketing specialist. When it comes to the tasks I was given they can be summarized into several categories.

Firstly I took care of the management, updating and optimization of the product catalog of eleven websites (that goes from the creation of product pages, changes of communication banners or even the development of sales pitches).

One of the main task was analyzing the key indicators related to the conversion on the site and finding ways to improve them. This was done mostly and we spent several days on creating reports in order to present them to the CEO.

Furthermore, I was in charge of tracking and monitoring the marketplace sales. This gave me the opportunity to work with several third parties such as Amazon and expand my knowledge on using back offices for instance.

Lastly, I worked with the IT team and web designers in order to implement changes and reflections around the ergonomic of the websites. I learned a small amount of coding by doing that.

Did you enjoy this job?

I really liked the job, as a first professional experience in marketing, it gave me a clearer vision of what was the job composed of. I learned many hard and soft skills that I am now able to use in my studies, school work and personal projects.

How would you describe the overall atmosphere/working environment?

Despite being founded 10 years ago, the company has a very « startup » style of atmosphere. It requires a lot of working hours and you usually work with all departments in order to succeed in your tasks. Working in an open space makes it more easy and comfortable. The average age of the employees in 25-30 years old which made it easier to get integrated.

Did you feel impactful in your work?

At SHOPINVEST your work is taken into consideration no matter if you are a manager or an intern. It was a good surprise to realize that as interns we were given real tasks and that other employees ask for your opinion. More than that, working in the webmarketing department for an e-commerce company made my job even more impactful as everything I worked on was put online and I could see the changes and how it evolved.

What was your boss like?

The founders are a married couple which was interesting to see, they separated the tasks between each others so I had the opportunity to work with both of them. They keep a close relationship with their employees and always ask for feedback which makes you feel involved in the company. They were both really busy at the time of my internship because they acquired a new big website, but still they made time for requests and questions which we all appreciated.

What was the workload like?

The work was pretty consequent. A typical day in the company starts at 9:00 AM and finish at best at 7:30 PM, with an hour break for lunch. We had a lot of hours during the week but the amount of work we had made it go quite fast because we were never out of tasks.

Before sales period, Christmas, black Friday or any specific holiday where people tend to buy gifts, the amount of workload doubles and days go really fast so you have to learn how to organize yourself in your tasks. Some days I had so much work that I had to leave the office around 8:30 PM-9:00 PM, which is something to consider.

Extra- curricular activities offered by the company, chances for growth?

This depends on which sector you’re working on, in the marketing department we did not attend many events unlike the purchase service or the finance one. However, we often met people we worked with which was always a chance to learn even more and meet new people.

Every month, the company organizes a « Pizza Party » where we have a 2 hours lunch and special guests come and deliver speeches and answer any questions we could have.

Apart from the work, a lot of fun things were organized like after work events, soccer games, laser games and even escape games which was a really good way to increase team building.

Do you feel like your a better worker from your time in this job?

As my first professional experience in marketing, I definitely feel like this internship has taught me a bunch of skills. I was able to apply everything I’ve learned in my first two years of business school, in that way it gave the program and courses I’m taking more sense. I am also grateful that I was able to find an internship that fits perfectly the kind of job I wanted to do and after that experience I can say that I see myself continue in that field.

On a more personal side, I’ve been able to grow as a person through the development of many soft skills including teamwork, organization and self confidence.

What advice would you give to someone at the start of the same job?

I would recommend this company and in specific this position to anyone who is keen on fashion ; e-commerce and obviously digital marketing. If I had any advice for someone who starts the same job it would be to be open for opportunities and to not be afraid of the amount of time and efforts you have to put in to keep up with the workload. At first it can seem as intimidating but once you get used to it, you will find your ways to be successful, plus if you try to give more than requests everybody would appreciate it.
